Richard Wilson is a Victorian Barrister. He is an experienced advocate with a broad commercial practice and particular expertise in human rights law and alternative dispute resolution. His practice in business disputes also involves trade practices, banking and company law. He is frequently engaged to act in cases involving the Victorian Charter of Human Rights. He has a longstanding interest in the role our laws and democratic institutions play to create a free and fair society.
Richard is a member of the Victorian Bar Pro Bono Committee and the Law Institute of Victoria Access to Justice Committee.
When he is not at the office, Richard Wilson is also a painter, a keen sailor and handyman. He also loves fishing. He and his partner Sharon have a farm next to a river just out of Melbourne, with six cattle and visiting kangaroos. They also have two adult children, neither of whom take their father seriously.
Richard regards pro bono work as a professional responsibility. It is also immensely rewarding work. He is committed to the organised delivery of pro bono legal services as a means to link clients in need to the generous capacity that exists throughout the legal profession. Providing greater access to justice in this efficient way helps the community and the profession. In turn it improves the administration of justice in our courts and promotes legal equality across society.
In 2012 Richard was awarded the Law Institute of Victoria President’s Honorary Award in recognition of excellence and outstanding contribution made within the legal profession, and acknowledging his work in community consultation as co-chair of the LIV’s Reconciliation Action Plan and chair of the Indigenous Issues and Aboriginal Reconciliation Committee, as well as for his work in shaping the legal profession’s approach to mental health.
